The Eastern Band of Cherokee has headquarters in western North Carolina and continues to inhabit the traditional Cherokee homeland. The Cherokee have traditionally sought to live in harmony with nature, and their symbolism reflects this predilection.
The numbers four and seven recur in Cherokee stories, rituals and political arrangements. In the Cherokee cosmology, the Earth is suspended from the heavens by four cords, which correspond to the four cardinal directions, north, south, east and west. In addition, the Cherokee recognize three other directions, up, down and center, which is where you are.
There are seven clans in the Cherokee nation, and the number seven also symbolizes a level of purity that few can attain. According to the Cherokee, two animals -- the owl and the cougar -- and five trees -- pine, cedar, spruce, laurel and holly -- have achieved this level.
In the Cherokee creation story, the animals inhabited an upper world called Galunlati when the Earth came into being, and they were told to keep watch over the creatures on Earth for seven days and nights. Only two animals were able to stay awake for the entire time, and these animals -- the owl and the cougar -- can accordingly see in the dark. The Cherokee particularly revere the owl because its eyes are on the front of its head, like those of humans. Because of the owl's connection to the spirit world, the Cherokee believe it brings medicine to the sick and that its appearance signifies an impending death.

One of the Cherokee legends related to anthropologist James Mooney, who lived among them for many years and collected their stories in his book, "Myths of the Cherokee," concerns the origin of the Pleiades, for which many cultures worldwide offer an explanation. In the Cherokee version, seven boys performed a spirit dance, and all but one rose into the sky to become the six main stars of that star cluster.
The seventh was pulled down by his mother and swallowed by the earth. Every day the mother grieved at the spot where he fell, and eventually a pine tree grew from her tears. The Cherokee thus say that the pine has the same nature as the stars and shines with the same light. Surrounding the star are garlands of leaves and acorns that represent the sacred fire that Cherokee spiritual leaders have maintained for hundreds of years.
Seven stars, representing the seven clans, surround the central seal, and one black star, placed in the top right corner, represents the thousands who died on the Trail of Tears -- the forced relocation of the Cherokee from the southeastern states to Oklahoma inpart of the "Indian Removal Act" passed by the U. Congress in and signed by President Andrew Jackson. Chris Deziel has a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in humanities.

Mooney states that Swimmer was his most valuable informant for his book on Cherokee life and thought. Swimmer is my grandfather's great-grandfather, my mom's great-great grandfather and my great-great-great grandfather of which I'm quite humbled and honored. Swimmer and Mooney spent "day and night, talking and writing" about the Cherokee and it was then that Mooney obtained a journal containing about pages of Swimmer's prayers, songs and prescriptions, which is now in the Smithsonian Institute.

Load Disqus Comments. The Cherokees are a Native American tribe that reside in America, and they have devised their own symbol syllabary to use as a medium of communication.
Almost every Cherokee Indian is familiar with these symbols and can understand them with ease. Every culture has developed their own unique symbols and signs over time, and Cherokee symbols are widely recognized language tools that were developed by the Native American Cherokees to portray their beliefs.
These symbols are distinguished as syllabary symbols. Syllabary is a form wherein a particular symbol or representation is used to denote a fixed syllable. Thus a sentence will contain a few syllables, rather than a lot of words. The symbols that are used in syllabary usually sound like a consonant which is optionalfollowed by a vowel. The symbols of Cherokees thus make use of syllabary, and not alphabets, because each symbol represents a distinct and unique sound.

There are a total of Native American tribes that are recognized by the Federal United States Government, and the Cherokees are the biggest amongst them. As a result, the popularity of their symbols and mediums of communication is quite high, and there are many people who can understand these symbols and speak them as well.
The Cherokee syllabary was created by Sequoyah, a Cherokee silversmith, in the year His contribution is noteworthy because he was completely illiterate and had no prior exposure to any form of written script. Byhis syllabary became immensely popular and the Cherokee tribes adopted it as their written language.
There are currently 85 symbols of Native American Cherokees originally there were 86and these comprise the written and spoken language of the Native American Cherokees. Each character denoted in a chart of symbols represents a particular sound, that ends with a vowel. The phonetic value of symbols differ and often mean two different things, thus implying that this is not easy to pick up. The pictorial representation of each syllable looks like an alphabet out of the English language, but it differs in the vocal sound greatly.
These symbols are widely used as signs on the streets in the areas where the Cherokees dominantly reside. There are three recognized Cherokee tribes in the United States today. The pictorial representation of these symbols are very attractive to look at, so some people use these as tattoo designs as well.
Tattoos of these symbols are quite commonly seen, especially in the Cherokee-inhabited areas, and these are intended to be a homage to their culture and belief systems. Most common Cherokee tattoos make use of the symbols for love, brotherhood, peace, harmony, unity and good fortune.
These protect the wearer from evil spirits and give them peace of mind. The Cherokees are believed to share a very close bond with the spiritual world. They believe that their forefathers from the spiritual world often communicated with them, and they in turn communicated back through the means of animals and other signs in nature. One of the most positive signs of Cherokee symbolism, the bear is believed to bring you courage to face all the difficulties in life.
Another positive symbol, it is believed to bring in good news, usually associated with good fortune.
